Whether they are printed with cartoons, photos, slogan or patterns, T-shirts are always the easiest and handiest garment to exhibit our personality and idiosyncrasy. For art fanatics, the Uniqlo SPRZ NY collection will be a must-have in the wardrobe for us to shout out loud “I LOVE ART!”
The collection is an extension of the partnership between the Japanese retailer and MoMA, the former of which sponsored the museum’s Friday night free admission program since 2013. The new line at Uniqlo, SPRZ NY (Surprise New York), features artworks of several beloved household names whose works have been exhibited in MoMA, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Ryan McGinness, Jack Pierson, David Shrigley, and Sarah Morris to name a few.
With the slogan “where art and fashion meet”, Uniqlo has successfully married the two by commercialising high art into common goods. Priced at $19.90 for a T shirt and $34.90 for a sweat shirt, the collection has hit the stores from New York to Hong Kong, and can be found at Uniqlo’s website. Fresh designs, including works of Mark Dion and Piet Mondrian, have joined the line up, so keep your eye out for the new arrivals. Contemporary art is no longer exclusively shown at the museum – we are now the mobile exhibition of our own favourite art pieces!
