When Sweden’s Next Top Model Turns Sweden’s Next Lucian Freud
Fashion Model, Artist, Sweden

Alice Herbst liked art and Americas Next Top Model. She already painted as a teenager but had to give it a little break, when she won the Swedish version of the modelling contest in 2012. Her life changed, she relocated to LA to start her new career, but figured after coming across some rather unprofessional photographers, who wanted to take nude shots, that the poor work ethic of the industry was not aligned with hers, stopped and moved back to Sweden.
Still being fascinated by drawing, she took on some studies at art school and changed positions from being in front of the lense to being behind the canvas, while her motifs kept some traces of her dip in the fashion world, depicting beatiful women being staged in a vintaged manner – imagine a kind of Hitchcock movie meets Lucian Freud.
Alice art is all over Instagram, which is also her main marketing tool to make a living. ”Instagram is my platform to market my work and I receive constructive feedback from people that follow my work. I feel Instagram allows me to be creative in a different way” and a fan base of 25K suggests that she is absolutely not wrong about it…

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…

That you are able to reach out with your work even without a gallery. Social media can be the most important tool in your studio if you know how to use it right. I also like how art is finally getting more accessible for people. One can easily discover new artists and does not have to rely completely on the institutions. People in the music industry, and fashion brands have been using social media for a long time and I love to see that galleries starts to work in the same direction as well!

My perfect working outfit…
I love to dress up for work. I had a teacher who once told me that I shouldn’t be painting in the black dress that I was wearing one day in front of the canvas. He said it was holding me back from creating great things. I couldn’t disagree more! I feel more confident when I put some effort on my outfits. Do not listen to your teachers too much, or at least not for a dressing advice.

My favourite new brand discovery…
I recently got my hands on Rive Gauche oil paint from Sennelier. I really like how fluid the paint feels and it’s a healthier choice for both the environment and me .

My everyday online art read is…
Everyday would be Instagram. I tend to discover artists there and then search for more information about them on different platforms.
