The Romantic Rebel
visual artist &  poet and muse, Paris

Anaïs de Contades, is a young Parisian visual artist, poet and muse (e.g. of British artist Lans King) focusing on the meaning of beauty and the power of romance.

During last years Paris fashion week she made hundreds of people turn their heads when walking around in downtown Paris and performing in Centre Pompidou only covered with one of her painted pink canvases.

Anaïs’ promotes the fine blend of eroticism and spirituality and calls herself nomad de luxe.
She also nearly spilled a glass of red wine on White Cube founder Jay Jopling and therefore wishes for a second chance to a spotless encounter.

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
The art world is going through a power shift. The system that has been in place for decades is being disrupted as artists have the possibility to share their work directly with the public.

Number of unanswered mails in your account…
21 emails.

My perfect working outfit…
When I am painting I usually wearing only a “petite culotte” (little panties ;-) or I like to be dressed as if I were going to an opening after a day in my studio. It’s totally fine if I get paint on my favourite dress.

This is part of my thing because I often make paintings on silk that can be exhibited and/or worn in reference to my performance artwork when I wear my canvas.

My favourite new brand discovery…
I love Iris Van Herpen! Her work is artistic, sculptural, avant-garde yet poetic and spiritual.
I’d like to have all of the pieces of the Haute Couture collection Autumn-Winter 2016-2017.

My everyday online art read is…
Contemporary art daily, Frieze and Artsy.

My necessary extravagance is…
Champagne is my opium, I usually drink some when I paint.
I would love to do a collaboration with Ruinart.

Most ridiculous thing I’ve ever bought…
It’s not really a thing…but from time to time I check into a beautiful hotel room with my little daschund Eliott even if I am not travelling. We order room service and I spend the day drawing in bed.

My ultimate secret after long working hours…
A long bath with candles and more champagne, followed by “une nuit d’amour”.

My favourite collaboration of the art- and fashion world…
I don’t really have a favourite one. Longchamp x Tracey Emin was rather cool, but it was a long time ago.

The Maison is doing well, but I think it’s a sleeping beauty. I have many creative ideas that could wake it up…so stay tuned…

My favourite hashtag…
#RomanticRebellion

On my office table I always have…
I am allergic to offices! I have a studio and there is always a cup of  Marco Polo or a Lapsang Soughong tea from Mariage Frères on my work table.

The most arty city is…
London.

Who are the best dressed in the art world…
I have to say Anaïs de Contades because I feel like I am best dressed when wearing one of my canvases.
I like to detour and play with the codes of both art and fashion.

Art world gent I would love to have lunch with…
Jay Joplin of White Cube Gallery. I had lunch at the table next to him at Casse-Croûte in Bermondsey, London, and I almost spilled my glass of red wine on him. I think I deserve a chance to make a second impression!

Artist(s) we should have on our watch list is/are…
Definitely Lans King, I am his muse, almost all of his paintings, drawing and future sculptures are inspired by me. He is a brilliant artist, we founded the #RomanticRebellion together and we collaborate on a lot of projects.
