The Woman Who Makes Talking Fashion Smart
Arts Writer, Berlin and Santa Fe, New Mexico

New York-born, Berlin-based, Dr. Ana Finel Honigman developed a knack on fashion theory while she was still a teenager and that never stopped. She expanded into arts, is holding a doctoral degree in History of Art from Oxford University, and as art and fashion critic basically travels around the globe most time of the year.

Her life is full of variety: She is a living dictionary for everything Art and Fashion related, lived from Sao Paolo to Stockholm (finally stranded in Berlin) and her writing features in publications ranging from Style to Artforum.

Most recently she founded A.F.H. – Culture Writers Agency, that provides dynamic and comprehensive content for artists, designers, start-ups and brands.
We chatted with the cosmopolitan about her proudest fashion moment, The Art Gents of PERES Projects and silk pyjamas….

My ideal working outfit looks like…
I always dress to move freely and enjoy my movements. Tactility determines what I buy, so I wear mostly silk, cashmere and vintage (never new) fur. Deciding that silk pajamas are the ideal answer for every occasion was my proudest fashion moment. For anything professional, I will probably wear black, washed-silk, pajama bottoms by Equipment, a slim black cashmere sweater, Tod’s patent leather loaders, a Mansur Gavriel bucket bag and one of several second-hand Joseph coats that I collect. I’ll just switch to heels and add more jewelry for evening. Alternatively, you’ll find me in MIH raw Marrakech jeans and a silk mans’ style button-down dress-shirt with a Mad-eleine Thompson cashmere wrap.

Heels or flats… Which brand or style…
I love my Gianvito Rossi patent leather block heels, classic Louboutins and collection of conceptual Alexander McQueen and Margiela heels but I almost always wear Tod’s, Riccardo Cartillone or J.Crew patent leather loafers or ballet flats. I recently realized that I hoard patent leather flats because they are indestructible and sensible but still look smart.

My favourite art-related blog/app is…
Artsy.

The last thing I bought and loved was…
I recently bought a poignantly beautiful print by Dan Attoe on the Exhibition A site. It shows swimmers in an outdoor pool at dusk. Besides being beautiful, it is witty and psychologically sharp, like all Attoe’s work. It has endlessly compelling layers of depth and poetry. I bought another number in the edition for my mother’s office and she loves it too.

Most ridiculous thing I ever bought…
When I first bought my flat, I fell in love with a bright orange Vistosi Murano glass pendant lamp from the 1960s. It cost more than I paid for three months’ rent in my first flat in Berlin but I loved its simple shape and intense color. When I installed it, it created a acid yellow light in my kitchen and I immediately knew, there was no way I could live with it illuminated, so its become a cheerful glass sculpture on my living room floor. I don’t regret owning it, but I know it was a pretty absurd thing to buy as my home’s first piece of décor!

My necessary extravagance is…
Fortnightly deep tissue massages, Yin Yoga in Santa Fe with Leia Hayes and regular private Pilates sessions at WorkoutBerlin, with Ari Hoffmann (my friend, mentor and my body’s godmother) are fundamental to my physical and mental wellbeing. To me, these are extravagant necessities.

Three things/products I always need to have in my purse…
I always carry lipstick, my tiny Moleskin date book with a Tiffany’s silver T-clip ballpoint pen, and SkinCeuticals Mineral Radiance UV Defense SPF 50. It is a powerful sunscreen but its powdery soft texture feels feminine and looks flawless.

My ultimate beauty secret after long working hours…
The healthy flush I get when I wear Lipstick Queen’s Endless Summer Stoked lipstick makes me always appear fresh, relaxed and alive.

My favorite merge of the art- and fashion world…
Martynka Wawrzyniak’s “Smell Me” conceptual and satirical perfume project. It’s a chic and humorous existential inquiry.

My most admired art world influencer…
Vanessa Friedman, the staff fashion critic at the New York Times and formerly at the FT, is not exactly an art influencer but her brilliance at putting clothes and trends into their psychological, historical, socio-political and aesthetic context is aesthetic culture criticism at its best. Her writing is intelligent, humble and wise. I keep her fashion reviews in mind whenever I write about art.

Art makes me…
Good art enables me to empathize with another person’s perspective and gain insight into my own. Whether political or highly personal, in any genre or medium, great art allows us to feel close to a better emotional and intellectual understanding of others and ourselves.
