Artist, Singapore

Glitter as a weapon, re-introduction of the colour pink and powerful female collectives are the ingredients influencing the thinking and creations of Russia-born, Singapore based Polina Korobova.

Exploring the notion of femininity in connection to strength and towering ones doubts and fears via art, is something spanning across Polina’s work:

“It all started after watching “The Punk Prayer”, a documentary based on the story of scandalous female collective, Pussy Riot. The documentary made me realize a lot of things, especially the idea of making a statement with your work – that evokes, educates and provokes the audience or your own journey. It has shown the power of an all female collective, especially in a country like Russia. Coming from such conservative and limiting background made me question my limits. as an example my first experience wearing the famous Balaclava was truly terrifying. Wearing a mask for the first time made me so paranoid that I decided to dedicate my work to facing my fears and becoming stronger.

An exciting conversation with Polina revealed her favourite wardrobe staples (refreshingly gothic), the reason for storing insane amounts of glitter in her studio and lunch phantasies with the self proclaimed “Artoholic” Charles Saatchi.

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
That pretending to be somebody else nowadays is considered an “alter-ego” and not a sign of insanity.

My perfect working outfit…
Well, I consider my studio my working environment now, so I say I love anything comfortable that i don’t care about staining or ruining, or my very colourful apron on top of any outfit. Oh, and I also teach, so outfits that you wear around kids. Once i sat on a paint palette and covered my ass with paint. Learnt my lesson for ever.

My favourite new brand discovery…
As I happen to be the complete opposite of my offensively pink instagram, my preferences in everyday fashion are rather dark. I find Dilara Findikoglu clothes gothically refreshing.

My everyday online art read is…
I don’t have time for an everyday read but if I’m being honest instagram allows me to keep up with all art news that I need on a daily basis.

Your necessary extravagance is…
So you know how everyone has this stereotype that all artists are hobos? or have no style? My necessary extravagance is proving people wrong and not being scared of mixing the two. My weakness is any type of shopping but if I had to pick one I would pick shoes!

Most ridiculous thing I ever bought…
Once I called a factory that produces glitter and asked for 5kg of pink reflective glitter, never regretted that decision.

My ultimate secret after long working hours…

When Im in Singapore I don’t really get to have a break as I’m always busy with something new. I learned the hard way that lack of rest can ruin not only health but daily inspiration. Me and my friends often take a drive to Malaysia for at least a few days, switch off our phones. enjoy the beach and come back to cruel Singapore recharged. Just having a minute or two to stop sometimes and remember who you are helps.

Favourite collaboration of the art- and fashion world…
Polina Korobova for MARNI stay tuned for 2020?! Okay, to be really honest though Dolce & Gabbana x Smeg 2017 collaboration making my baker in me melt.

My favourite hashtag…
#glitter

On my office table I always have…
Well, Im not sure you can call it an office but in my studio space I always have – everything you need to make an art work in under an hour, all sorts of things that come in all shades of pink, insane amounts of all shades of glitter you can imagine and lots and lots of tape.

The most arty city is…
Bangkok – loud, spontaneous, spicy, full of everyday inspiration, colourful, aggressive but also extremely welcoming.

Art world gent I would like to have lunch with…
A long time ago I read “ Im an Artoholic” by Charles Saatchi and realised that he is insanely interesting. I would invite him for brunch because i have a lot of questions and first one I would ask is “ Will there ever be “Sensation” vol 2”?

Who are the best dressed in the art world…
Have you seen what Yayoi Kusama wears on daily basis??? I wish that at some point of my life I will be as brave as she is…or crazy… And also Vivienne Westwood! One might not consider her part of the art world anymore but for me she will always be fashion enthusiast that helped punks across the world find their style!
