Pélleas et Mélisande
A dream come true? Serbian art star Marina Abramovic is collaborating with Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen for a new opera, of all things. Van Herpen has created 20 costumes for a production of Claude Debussy’s opera “Pelléas et Mélisande.” The show, which is on at the opera in Antwerp, has a chilly vibe where actors are dressed in dark, metallic fabrics by the iconic designer. As for the choreography, that’s where Abramovic comes in. Just as the performance has actors pulling at long strings across the stage—which look like futuristic spider-webs—Abramovic helps control the movements of the actors. “Van Herpen’s creations are more like sculptures than fashion and she has this way of taking one idea and stretching it to the maximum,” Abramovic told WWD. “She is dedicated; she has this burning inspiration and is so inventive.”
