A Powerful High Achiever And Her No-One-Else Outfits
Art Advisor and Creative Designer, New York City

Upon beginning her career as a creative and interior designer in New York, Maria Brito, a Venezuela-born Harvard graduate-plus-entrepreneur, has turned multiple residencies of high-profile celebs including the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Diddy into artfully-imbued living spaces, not to mention her own Chelsea apartment. The New Yorker has certainly evinced her impressive ability to integrate art into interiors. As a competent high-achiever, Maria was chosen as one of the 20 Power Players in the Art World in 2015 by Complex Magazine, and her monograph – Out There – was the recipient of the USA Best Book Awards in both the Art and Design Categories in 2013. Aside from interiors, Maria has launched grandeur limited edition fashion accessories with artists including Katherine Bernhardt, Erik Parker, Trudy Benson, and more.

In this Style Talk, we talked to this masterly virtuoso about no-one-else-outfit, the return to figurativism, and that she bragged about her accessories partnership.

Maria Brito shows off her new handbag collaboration with three contempary artists as wearable art.

My ideal working outfit looks like…
No one else’s.

Heels or flats… Which brand or style…
Both, I must say. There was a time where you could never see me wearing flat shoes. Then Isabel Marant came up with the coolest sneakers and that changed it all for me. I also like Golden Goose sneakers. With heels, I’m not really partial to nay brand, I love way too many: Aquazzura, Miu Miu, Prada, Lanvin, Valentino, Fendi… can’t really pick one!

My favourite art-related blog/app is…
I think both ArtInfo and Artnet make a great job in keeping us informed about everything that’s happening in the art world.

The last thing I bought and loved was…
As a piece of art, I bought a canvas by Mira Dancy about a month ago.

Most ridiculous thing I ever bought…
Too many to remember!

My necessary extravagance is…
As an alcoholic beverage I only drink champagne.

Three things/products I always need to have in my purse…
iPhone, sunglasses, credit cards.

My ultimate beauty secret after long working hours…
Skyn iceland hydro cool eye patches.

My favourite collision of the art- and fashion world…
Is it too self-serving if I say that my accessories collaborations are really amazing? I really believe that creating fashion accessories working so closely with artists and carefully translating their work and designing based on who they are has been defining for me and for my brand and my company. We are definitely keeping the fashion and art enthusiast excited and curious about who will we partner with next and what will we release for the following season.

My most admired art world influencer…
Ai Weiwei.

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
There is a return to figurativism, humanism, art that moves people, art that engages the eye, heart and mind, that come from artists who really have a talent and don’t need to support their work with pages and pages of mediation. I’m horrified and appalled by art that fits in the so-called “Zombie Formalism” category.

Art makes me…
Alive.

My next art trip/travel will be…
To be honest with you, I don’t know. There is an art fair every week somewhere in the world. It has become repetitive and boring. I’m not jaded, just not into seeing the same art and format over and over again. I do have to go to Los Angeles very soon to see clients and galleries and to visit and The Broad, which I’m dying to see and haven’t.

The most arty city is…
New York.

The perfect art-world gentlemen is…
Jay Jopling.

Artist(s) we should have on our watchlist is/are…
Mira Dancy, Nina Chanel Abney, Michael Dotson, Raul de Nieves, Josh Reames, Rachel Rossin, Sheena Rose… too many young and exciting talents.
