Glitter Bum Bruises – The Finnish Way
Artist, Berlin and London

Getting a little bruise from rollerskating is one thing, getting a head-sized one from roller derby that’s another. You might have seen the Drew Barrymore movie “Whip it” to get an insight into how hardcore this game can be or you just have a look at the works of Riikka Hyvönen who totally got into visualising those rainbow coloured injuries for her “Roller Derby Kisses” series.

It all began by a friend telling her about her last game and asking Riikka whether she wants to see an image online – of course she wanted and this is how it all got started.

Roller Derby Kisses lies somewhere between painting and sculpture, beginning with a documentary photograph which the artist re-renders in 3D on canvas with the addition of fabric and glitter. The works are a celebration of the players’ bravery, and also convey the kitsch, glam spangle and knowing self-objectification of the sport. Oh yes, and the paintings’ titles are taken from comments that the players posted under photos shared on the internet…
