Art Basel is around the corner as are the satellite fairs – but also the Swiss Edition of Design Miami.
To get you prepared for all, let`s have a little thought, whether it might be worth start collecting some design, too or even instead.
Just a guess and below a few reasons to get you in the right mood.
1. Live with it:
If you buy a nice design piece, say a mid-century dining table, you can actually really live with it. Just think of a vintage lamp you can switch on and off daily, or a Campana brothers armchair you can cuddle in to watch some Netflix at night.
You can incorporate your entire design collection in your home – and in your life. And this is something you can`t really do with many investments.
2. New places and faces:
There are really cool fairs you can add to your “Design Addict” travel agenda. Certainly, Design Miami is THE one but just think of Milan`s Salon del Mobile or Downtown Design in Dubai – time to meet some new faces and places.
3. Eye candy:
In the design scene there are so many handsome design dudes and dealers that make collecting design really fun: Just think of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin from Studio Formafantasma or Sebastian Errazuriz. Sigh…
4. Positive vibes:
Isn’t it like that: Generally speaking, designers want to make you feel comfortable while many artists these days aim to make you feel uncomfortable with provoking pieces. That`s not nice, the world can be sad enough – so follow the happiness.
5. King of Instagram:
You don’t run any longer in danger that your home is placed on Great Art in Ugly Rooms but rather on AD or Larry`s List.
6. Keep it easy:
The conversations are slightly more practical and not full of bullshit phrases such as “human condition”, “inner struggles” or “complex discourse”. It is rather about facts: size, year, material or fabric and shipping costs. Isn`t life complicated enough?
7. Nudity:
If you love nudity, also in design you don’t need to miss that fun part, just think of the erotic creations of the Haas Brothers to get you started – PM us for more design-porn recommendations; we have plenty.
8. Get more for your $$$:
Although fine design doesn’t come cheap, compared with contemporary art it remains something of a bargain. “You can get a lot more with one hundred thousand dollars in fine design than you can in art,” says Rodman Primack, Design Miami`s director.
