Why You Should Know “JEMMA”

Who wouldn’t want to get inside the brain of Lauren Benrimon, who was recently in the midst of a self-directed photo shoot in Saint Martin? As the daughter of the gallery owner of David Benrimon Fine Art, Lauren – also known as JEMMA – was bequeathed her father’s sterling eye for refinement. The versatile muse has transported her very own definition of beauty and unleashed her flair for colour onto paintings – vivid acrylic playfully lounging on plain white canvases.

We spoke with the New-York-based artist about why to travel as often as possible and how her dad inspires her.

My ideal working outfit looks like…
Depends on the season, but usually I try to mix street style with slight business attire. Ripped jeans with a white blouse, high boots in the winter with a beanie or baseball cap.

Heels or flats…? Which brand or style…?
I would go with flats or booties. I love my Stuart Weitzman high boots and short Dolce Vita booties.

My favourite art-related blog/app is…
I try to merge my personal Instagram with art and lifestyle, but one of my favourite art-related accounts is TheMostFamousArtist. I think they show art that is clever and relevant.

The last thing I bought and loved was…
My pink ombre rabbit fur vest. I can wear it over just about anything.

Most ridiculous thing I ever bought…
Hello Kitty paraphernalia, but that was just a phase.

My necessary extravagance is…
Travelling. I love living in New York, but I’m always missing warm weather and am up for adventure and beautiful scenery. Whether it be spending a month in Israel on the beach in Tel Aviv or going skiing upstate for a weekend, I travel as often as possible.

Three things/products I always need to have in my purse…
Three things I must have on me at all times: Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm, headphones for music, and sunglasses.

My ultimate beauty secret after long working hours…
SLEEP! Whether it’s twenty minutes or an hour, when I get home from work I need a little beauty nap before going out on my next adventure.

My favourite collision of the art and fashion worlds…
I think there needs to be a stronger connection between art and fashion (and this is something I’m looking to explore personally). I suppose Art Basel Miami is the closest they get for now, but once a year is not enough!

My most admired art-world influencer…
Definitely my dad, the owner of David Benrimon Fine Art. He is the reason I have been around all these amazing artists my whole life. There is not a day that I don’t see him excited about his work in the gallery. You truly see his appreciation of art, which is something that is easily lost in the business world.

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
There are so many different forms of art. New genres are being created constantly. Artists and audiences are sharing such strong connections or even the lack thereof, but all is being accepted. People are learning to be open-minded even if that certain thing doesn’t specifically speak to them. That’s one of the main ideas I took out of art school at SVA.

Art makes me…
Excited.

My next art trip/travel will be…
Art Basel Hong Kong.

The most arty city is…
New York.

Artist(s) we should have on our watchlist is/are…
Li Hongbo and Sandra Chevrier.
